Martina Navratilova and Casey Neistat react to Ruth Chepngetich breaking the women's world record at the Chicago Marathon
Ruth Chepngetich has captured the attention of the sporting world with her record-breaking performance at the Chicago Marathon 2024. Former tennis legend Martina Navratilova, and YouTube personality Casey Neistat couldn't help but express their admiration for the Kenyan runner's world-record performance at the Chicago Marathon 2023.
The 30-year-old athlete achieved a new timing of 2:09.57 at the Chicago Marathon. If officially ratified, this shall be the first time a female athlete has breached the barrier of 2:10.00 at any women's marathon event.
Navratilova cheered Chepngetich as she reposted the video of her achievement on her X account,
On the other hand, Neistat, who has also taken part in the Ironman triathlons, wrote in his post on the X account [formerly Twitter],
"Just incredible!"
Ruth Chepngetich has won the Chicago Marathon for the third time since 2021. She broke the previous world record set by Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia, who clocked 2:11.53 at the Berlin Marathon in 2023. The Ethiopian runner had clocked a timing of 2:22.58 at the Paris Olympics to win the silver medal.
Chepngetich dedicated her win to Kelvin Kiptum, a former Kenyan runner who had set the world record in the men's marathon at the Chicago Marathon last year. Kiptum died in February 2024 due to an unfortunate car crash.

Ruth Chepngetich has done the unthinkable at the Chicago Marathon 2024. With a world record-breaking performance of 2:09.57, the Kenyan runner has become the first athlete to break the barrier of 2:10.00.
However, when she was asked the secret behind this impressive victory, the Kenyan runner surprised everyone with her reply.
When asked about her coach, Chepngetich mentioned,
"Me, as Ruth Chepngetich, I don’t have a coach. I am self-coached.”
Chepngetich's achievements aren't only limited to the Chicago Marathon event. She had previously set a world record at the Istanbul Half Marathon in 2021, with a timing of 1:04.02, which continues to be the third fastest time for any women's half marathon event.
Apart from the above, Ruth Chepngetich has two more titles at the World Marathon Majors and a bronze medal from the London Marathon 2020 to her credit. She also won a gold medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, with a timing of 2:32.43. Chepngetich had also participated at the Tokyo Olympics, but couldn't manage to finish the race.
