New York City Marathon 2024 Results: Sheila Chepkirui shocks Hellen Obiri as Abdi Nageeye claims men's title in final World Marathon Major of the year

Sheila Chepkirui and Abdi Nageeye emerged as the best performers of the 2024 New York City Marathon as they claimed victories in the women's and men's elite races. With this, the six World Marathon Majors (WMM) for the 2024 season have now concluded.

In the 2024 edition of the women's race, Chepkirui produced a sensational victory over the defending champion Hellen Obiri, crossing the finish line in a time of 2:24:35. Notably, the top three positions were all occupied by Kenyans as Vivian Cheruiyot came third, clocking a 2:25:21.

Abdi Nageeye, the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, won his first WMM title, having finished third at the 2022 edition of the NYC Marathon, as he recorded a time of 2:07:39. He finished ahead of three-time World Marathon Majors champion Evans Chebet (2:07:45) and Albert Korir (2:08:00) to accomplish the incredible feat.

Meanwhile, in the wheelchair division, the United States emerged as the top nation in both women’s and men’s competition. Susannah Scaroni put on a commanding show, finishing over 10 minutes ahead with 1:48:05 to claim victory over fellow American Tatyanna McFadden, who completed in a time of 1:58:47. Meanwhile, Daniel Romanchuk secured his victory with a time of 1:36:31.

Over 50,000 runners participated at the 2024 New York City Marathon beginning at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and concluding at West 67th Street in Central Park, Manhattan.

The prize money for the open division winners is set at $100,000 for first place, $60,000 for second, and $40,000 for third, with a total of ten athletes receiving cash prizes for their performances. Additionally, the top six finishers in the wheelchair division will also receive prize money, with the winner bagging $35,000.
