"Not a SINGLE point deducted?"- Riley Gaines slams IOC for negligence after controversial boxer Lin Yu-Ting and Esra Kahraman's bout at Paris Olympics
Riley Gaines recently took a jab at the IOC about the officiating standard during the match between Lin Yu-Ting and Esra Yildiz Kahraman. The two boxers locked horns during the women's 57kg semifinals, where Yu-Ting dominated the contest with clear winning points.
Gaines, who is a self-proclaimed advocate of women's safety in sports and has frequently voiced her dissent against transgender athletes competing in women's sports, alleged the IOC of neglecting a possible foul made by Yu-Ting in the bout.
The former University of Kentucky swimmer shared a clip from the fixture and highlighted the four punches by the Taiwanese boxer that landed on the back of Kahraman's head. Gaines called out IOC for not deducting a single point while referring to Yu-Ting as a "male".
"4 punches to the back of the head (by a male nonetheless)??? And not a SINGLE point deducted??? If there were one video to portray the negligence and the cowardice of the IOC, this is it," Gaines wrote.
The incident occurred at a time when Yu-Ting has been at the center of the gender controversy during the ongoing Olympics. Their semifinal encounter was dominated by Yu-Ting, who advanced to the gold medal match to compete against Poland's Julia Szeremeta on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
Riley Gaines lashes out at Imane Khelif on earning the qualification for women's final at the Paris Olympics 2024
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif drew criticism from Riley Gaines after the former earned the place to compete in the women's 66kg boxing finals.
Khelif attracted the spotlight after the Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from their Round of 16 match a minute into their match. Following Carini's withdrawal, Khelif's reportedly failed gender test (rejected by IOC later) conducted by IBA during the 2023 World Championships started making rounds on social media, drawing criticism towards the boxer.
Later, Khelif defeated Janjaem Suwannapheng with winning points to earn herself a spot in the welterweight finals, following which Gaines condemned her by referring to her as a "mediocre male."
"Imane Khelif is an Olympic finalist....contending for a gold medal....in women's boxing....as a male. Why have women's sports at all if any mediocre male can compete in them?" she wrote.
Khelif will face China's Liu Yang in the final, slated for August 10, 2024.
