Paris Olympics 2024 Medal Count Day 16: China overtakes Team USA as the race for the top heats up on the final day
With only a day left before the Paris Olympics 2024 concludes, the USA is second on the medal tally table with 122 medals. The USA women's 4x400m relay team secured the gold medal in what was the last event at the Stade de France during the 2024 Games.
The American team with 38 gold, 42 silver, and 42 bronze medals was surpassed by China with 90 medals, including 39 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze medals. Australia and Japan are next to the USA with 50 medals (18 gold and silver, and 14 bronze) and 43 medals (18 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze), respectively. The host nation is in fifth place with 62 medals (16 gold, 24 silver, and 22 bronze medals).
Athletics is leading the medal tally for the American squad with 34 medals (14 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze). Swimming and gymnastics are following athletics with 28 and 10 medals, respectively. Masai Russell wins gold in 100m hurdles at Paris Olympics 2024
Masai Russell of Team USA secured a gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles on Day 16 of the 2024 Paris Olympics. She defeated Cyréna Samba-Mayela and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who posted 12.34 seconds, and 12.36 seconds, respectively, while the American recorded 12.33 seconds.
The women's relay team, including Shamier Little, Gabby Thomas, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and Alexis Holmes, clinched a gold medal after having a decisive lead with 3:15.27. They surpassed the Dutch and British squads, who clocked 3:19.50 and 3:19.72, respectively.
The women's football and men's basketball teams also clinched gold medals on Day 16 of the glorious sporting event. Nevin Harrison secured a silver in the women's canoeing (C-1 200m). Brooke Raboutou collected a silver in the women's combined sports climbing after gathering 156.0 points.
Shelby McEwen bagged a silver medal in the men's high jump after a tight face-off with New Zealand's Hamish Kerr. Grant Fisher won a bronze in the men's 5000m while Kyle Dake bagged a bronze in the men's 74kg freestyle wrestling. Victor Montalvo collected a bronze in the men's breaking, an event that made its debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
