PB, SB, DNF, and more: What do these athletics track and field terms mean? Explained

The athletics track and field events are underway at the Paris Olympics 2024. In some cases, the terminology of athletics events can at times be confusing for the fans.

In this article, we look to explain some of the terms fans might very commonly come across during the various track and field events over the coming days. The abbreviations of terms such as PB, SB, DNF, and more are explained in detail.

Let's start with the terms WR and OR, two terms that often pop up on the screen when watching the Olympic Games. WR stands for world record, while OR is the Olympic record. The record books are set to be rewritten on multiple occasions during the ongoing Paris Olympics.

Then there's PB, which is an athlete's personal best. SB, on the other hand, means the season's best. The term DNS stands for did not start, which is usually in case of a race. DNF, meanwhile, means did not finish.

At the Olympics, the qualification rounds are mandatory. When a Q pops up beside an athlete's name, it means that they have qualified. If it appears as a q, it means the athlete has provisionally qualified, but their status depends on the results of others who are yet to compete.

In the case of the jump events, X signifies a foul. In the case of pole vault or long jump, O means that an athlete has reached a specific height and can now move on to the next barrier. Meanwhile, an r means that someone was forced to retire.

Event names can often be shown in short to make them easier to decode. PV means pole vault, while HT is short for hammer throw.
