“The most accessible track meet ever” - Gabby Thomas reacts as Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian announces broadcast partners for Athlos meet
Gabby Thomas will be a part of the inaugural Athlos meet, a track event organized by Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, which will feature only female athletes. Recently, the league announced its broadcast partners and the Olympic Champion couldn't be more excited about the news.
Thomas will come into this meet after an incredible season in which she claimed three golds at the recently concluded Paris Olympics. She will be one of the biggest stars of the meet and is expected to draw in quite the crowd. The event is scheduled for September 26 and will take place at the Icahn Stadium in New York.
Alexis Ohanian recently announced the official broadcast partners for the Athlos meet on X with a video, and the caption of the post read:
“Everyone watches women's sports, but too often their games are broadcast on small networks with no promotion or behind expensive paywalls. For Athlos, we're going BIG - AND ACCESSIBLE. Behold our global broadcast partners for our NYC race: YouTube, X, ESPN & DAZN.🔥”
Gabby Thomas reacted enthusiastically to Ohanian's tweet:
“Let’s freaking go!!!! Athlos track meet. Sep 26. NYC. You can watch on YouTube, X, ESPN, and DAZN ?! Feels like the most accessible track meet ever?? Finally!!”
Thomas has been a staunch advocate for the visibility of track and field. In April, when the Diamond League announced their move to FloTrack, the sprinter criticized the decision. Calling ‘the fundamental access to watching track and field’ the most important factor in keeping alive the sport's popularity, she had said,
“I'm most critical of decisions like that because it does eliminate visibility and there is a pretty big paywall behind watching our track meets now...Paying $30 a month to watch a track meet is not reasonable for a lot of people, to be completely honest.”
Gabby Thomas is to be joined at Athlos by Tamara Clark, Torrie Lewis, and Jenna Prandini in the 200m
While Gabby Thomas will be the biggest name in the 200m at the Athlos meet, she will be joined by other talented sprinters. As of now, the roster of the event includes Americans Tamara Clark and Jenna Prandini, as well as Australian teen sensation Torrie Lewis.
Clark was a part of the 4x100m team that stormed to gold at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships. Prandini is a World Champion and Olympic silver medalist in the same event. Meanwhile, Lewis turned leads early this year when she outdid Sha'Carri Richardson at the Xiamen Diamond League.
