"The moment is already traumatic & the capture of it is even more grueling"-Simone Manuel slams broadcasting Caeleb Dressel after he broke into tears
Simone Manuel slammed broadcasters for airing vulnerable moments of athletes during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The American swimmer expressed her displeasure about the incident of NBC's broadcasting of Caeleb Dressel after he failed to qualify for the Men's 100m butterfly final at the Games.
Dressel placed 13th overall in the semi-final, thereby missing a spot in the line-up for the finals of the Men's 100m butterfly event. After failing to qualify for the finals, Dressel broke into tears in the arena and hugged a member of the team as he walked out.
Broadcasters captured a very emotional Dressel and showcased the moment on live television for a long time. Fans and enthusiasts around the world criticized the broadcaster's decision to capture this vulnerable moment for an extended duration.
Simone Manuel took to X to express her disapproval of the incident and remarked that broadcasting such moments to the whole world could make it even more traumatic for an athlete who is already going through a tough time.
"I’ll forever stand by this. Interviews/recordings/ photography in these moments really aren’t necessary. I can attest to the fact that the moment is already traumatic and the capture of it is even more grueling. I hope we can give athletes more grace because they’re human first!," she tweeted.
Dressel received huge support from fans after the incident and spoke about the incident in an interview (as quoted by wkyc.com):
“It hasn’t been my best week. I don’t think I need to shy away from that," he said.
Simone Manuel raises her voice to stop interviews for athletes after disappointing performances
Simone Manuel had raised her voice to stop interviewing athletes after they had a disappointing performance in major events. In 2021, Manuel took to X to share her experience as an athlete and said that athletes should be given the time to process their performances before speaking about them, especially during tough moments.
"Please stop interviewing athletes right after a disappointing performance before they have any time to process anything. Trust me. They gave it their all. Nothing else people need to know at that time," she said.
"The amount of people who say we’re just sore losers or that we are “obligated” to do the interviews is problematic. Lack of empathy for athletes is problematic. As someone who studied communication in college with multiple journalism classes, I understand the role of media," she added.
Simone Manuel was eliminated in the women's 50m freestyle preliminaries at the Paris Olympics but won the gold medal in the 4x100m Freestyle relay.
