“The season is not over yet”- Jakob Ingebrigtsen confirms his half-marathon debut in Copenhagen after breaking 3000m world record

Norwegian middle-distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen is scheduled to make his debut appearance in a half-marathon in Copenhagen following his exploits at the 2024 Diamond League series. Ingebrigtsen not only claimed his fourth Diamond League title this season in the 1500m but also shattered the 3000m world record at the Silesia Diamond League meet.

Ingebrigtsen will next feature in the Copenhagen Half Marathon scheduled on September 15, Sunday, at 9:30 am Local Time or 3:30 am Eastern Time. Covering 21.0975 km or 13.1094 miles, the half-marathon begins at Øster Allé, a street in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. The half-marathon will be live-streamed on the World Athletics Inside Track.

Although rumors were circulating for several days about Ingebrigtsen’s participation in the half-marathon, the Paris Olympics gold medalist in the 5000m, confirmed the news on Instagram with a picture of the bib and shoes that he will be using for the race. The 23-year-old said:

“The season is not over yet. I will be running my first half marathon tomorrow morning at @cphhalf 😅⚡️”

Notably, the half-marathon is expected to be Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s last event before he ends his 2024 season. The 2024 season also witnessed Ingebrigtsen collect two gold medals at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, where he won both the 1500m and 5000m events.

At the 2023 Copenhagen Half Marathon, Ed Cheserek, an NCAA star distance runner from Kenya, won the men’s elite race with a time of 59:11, narrowly defeating Bernard Koech, who finished second with a time of 59:13 in a thrilling contest.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, a two-time world champion in the 5000m discipline, recently shared his thoughts before his participation at the Copenhagen Half Marathon. During a press conference (starting 04.26 onwards), he said:

“The half marathon is definitely something very different from what I am used to. Obviously, I have never participated in one so time will tell. But, I think the distance for tomorrow is celebrated with what the human body is capable of doing for 21 kms. For multiple people, it's gonna be a race but I am not here to do anything else than to have fun, see what I can do."

Regarding what would be his approach, Ingebrigtsen mentioned:

“I don't know. I think the first couple of minutes most of the elite field is gonna follow the pace. I think that's just how it goes. I think for a lot of us, we quickly will realize if it's too fast or too slow. So, I am prepared for as a measure it's gonna be a challenge or tough race. But I think after a couple of case, I will realize what my body can handle and what I can do. So, let's do the couple of minutes first after the gun and take it from there.”

As Ingebrigtsen makes his half-marathon debut, it is worth noting that the Norwegian athlete has a personal best of 27:54 in the 10 km road race achieved in October 2019.
