"This is where champions are built"- Andre De Grasse shares glimpses from training ahead of Paris Olympics 2024
Canadian athlete Andre De Grasse recently qualified for the Paris Olympics following his victorious display at the Canadian Olympic trials. He is now gearing up to compete at the Summer Games and has shared some glimpses from his training camp.
De Grasse has already competed in two Olympic Games. He grabbed three medals on his debut in Rio in 2016, winning bronze in the 100m, silver in the 200m, and bronze in the 4x100m relay. He dominated the 200m during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and clocked 19.62s to defeat Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles. He also clinched the bronze medal in the 100m at the 2020 Olympics.
The 29-year-old competed in the 100m dash at the 2024 Olympic trials and booked his spot at the Paris Games after claiming first place with a time of 10.20s. The two-time Olympian will also be defending his 200m title this year.
He is poised to square off at the Summer Games and is engrossed in his training sessions. CBC recently shared a video of De Grasse, where he was seen training and talking about his tough workout sessions. He revealed that on Saturdays he does four 250s with only 6 minutes of rest.
"This is one of the toughest workouts. Saturdays, four 250s, 6 minutes rest. But this where champions are built. You can do these workouts and when you get to the race, it's going to be so much easier. I just have to keep struggling until it becomes easy."
Andre De Grasse opens up about his setbacks after winning 200m gold at the Tokyo Olympics
Andre De Grasse recently reflected on the adversities he had to navigate after winning the 200m race at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Following his win, he went through several trials and tribulations, including an unexpected toe injury and testing positive for COVID-19 just two months prior to competing at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. He opened up about it all in a recent video shared by the CBC Olympics on their Instagram handle.
"I feel like life is not a straight line, I mean everybody is gonna have to go through adversity, there's always gonna be ups and downs, but you know sometimes you have to reflect on those bad moments because you have to see how you can get better from the situation," Andre De Grasse said.
Speaking about his double setback, the athlete added:
"I was such on high after I won at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Now the following year, all of a sudden I get a toe injury. Training was going so well and I was getting ready for the World Championships and feeling good, and then I get COVID. So it's like a double setback."
Andre De Grasse further said:
"I pulled out of 200m, you know my signature event, which obviously was a bit devastating at the time but I had to pick myself up and say, 'alright guys, let's do this, let's go win this relay and make it happen.'"
After facing a number of challenges in recent years, Andre De Grasse will next be seen competing in the 100m and 200m against the likes of Noah Lyles at the Paris Olympics, which is scheduled to be held from July 26 - August 11.
