"Tyreek Hill is just chasing clout" - Noah Lyles hits back at the Dolphins' wide receiver following his claim of beating the Olympic champion in 100m
Noah Lyles silenced Tyreek Hill after the American football wide receiver claimed he would beat him in the 100m. The 100m reigning Olympic champion questioned Hill's comments and asked him to meet on the track to back his claims.
Noah Lyles, the 100m champion at the 2023 Worlds, was challenged by Miami Dolphins wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, following the sprinter's Paris Olympic success. Hill, displeased with the track athlete questioning the label 'World Champions' of NBA players, claimed that he would defeat him in the 100m dash.
"For him to do that and say that we're not world champions of like our sport, like come on, bro, just speak on what you know about, you know what I'm saying? And that's track. I would beat Noah Lyles. No, I wouldn't beat him by a lot, but I would beat Noah Lyles,” Tyreek Hill said (at 0:19 via "NBA Central" on X).
Making an appearance on the "Nightcap" podcast hosted by Shannon Sharpe and Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson, Lyles said that he felt that the wide receiver wasn't serious and was 'chasing clout'.
"Tyreek is just chasing clout. Anytime somebody fast comes up, he says he wants to race them. If he really wanted to race people, he would’ve shown up like D.K. Metcalf. The man raced in the 60m this year in the Masters division. The man dodges smoke. I don’t have time for that…" [53:30]
Lyles added:
"If he’s truly serious about it – I’m not talking about you just talking on the internet and you ain’t actually coming to me and talking to my agent and saying let’s set something up – if you’re seriously about it, you’ll see me on the track.”
Notably, shortly after Tyreek Hill's claim, the six-time World champion responded via an X post, pretending to have forgotten Hill's name, and addressed him as 'Cheetah', the nickname Hill received during his early career owing to his quick speed and reflexes.
"Ummm, what's that's guy, what's the cheetah guy from football? Well, I can't remember his name. Mark! What's the football player who thinks he's fast name? Tyreek Hill," Lyles said (via "Jomboy Media" on X).
Rai Benjamin backed Noah Lyles after Tyreek Hill's bold claim
Amid the ongoing social media back and forth between Lyles and Hill, Rai Benjamin, the 400m hurdles Olympic champion, backed Lyles over Tyreek Hill, opining that the latter could never beat the 100m reigning champion.
"I'm tired of the Noah Lyles slander. That's my guy. Tyreek you're not beating Noah in the 100 man. There's just no way in hell. You probably won't even beat the top collegiate guys," Benjamin said on the Nightcap podcast via X [at 0:21].
While Lyles clinched the gold in 100m after clocking 9.79, he had to settle for a bronze place finish in the 200m. After the race, USTAF released a statement announcing that the 27-year-old had run the 200m event despite having tested positive for COVID.
