USA Men's Gymnastics Qualification Recap: Paul Juda and Fred Richards shine, Brody Malone stunned at Paris Olympics
The USA men's gymnastics qualification round took place on the first day of the Paris Olympics (July 27). The gymnastics side of the United States of America produced a number of unexpected results during the event.
The most surprising outcome for the United States after the completion of Subdivision 1 was the performance of the two-time World Championships medalist, Brody Malone. The 24-year-old finished last among the three US gymnasts who competed in the all-around events.
Malone showed numerous flaws during his performance in the pommel horse and floor exercises that cost him big time in the qualifying round. Due to this performance, the Tennessee native was also unable to advance to the all-around event finals, where a maximum of two gymnasts from each nation are permitted to compete. Furthermore, Malone has not been able to advance to any of the apparatus individual finals.
Following a disappointing performance, Malone elaborated on the mistakes that led to his disappointing performance during the qualifying stage of the Paris Olympics. He stated in an interview (via USA Today):
"Just silly mistakes that I don’t usually make. But I mean, it happens. It’s sports. You’ll not always be perfect. So I’m just going to go reset tomorrow in the gym, reset my foundation with some basics and then just be ready for team finals."
Malone was the only member in the current US men's gymnastics roster who had prior experience competing on an Olympic stage and his his failure to make it to the all-around finals of the tournament was a shocking result for the US men's gymnastics team.
However, the U.S. men’s gymnastics team found a silver lining in the performances of Paul Juda and Fred Richards on Saturday. Juda and Richards, both competing in the first Olympics of their careers, produced impressive performances, collecting 82.865 and 83.498 points, respectively, in the all-around apparatus. Owing to this performance, both Olympic debutants sealed a place in the finals of the individual all-around apparatus.
The U.S. men’s gymnastics team secured their spot in the Olympic finals after placing fifth in the team all-around with a score of 253.229 points. China, Japan, Ukraine, and Great Britain finished ahead of the United States.
