American artistic gymnast Fred Richard narrowly escaped injury during the finals of the men’s gymnastics all-around of the 2024 Paris Olympics. During the first rotation, Richard experienced a late stumble while performing on the pommel horse, resulting in him falling awkwardly.
The incident led to a disappointing score of 12.733 points by Richard in the opening discipline of the individual all-around finals. The 2023 World Championships bronze medalist will now aim for a comeback on other apparatus at the Games.

Earlier, Richard secured a place in the finals of the men’s individual all-around by finishing 10th in the qualifications, with a total score of 83.498 points. This included 13.833 on floor exercise, 13.633 on pommel horse, 13.500 on the rings, 13.933 on vault, 14.433 on the parallel bars, and 14.166 on the high bar.
Besides Fred Richard, Paul Juda of the United States has also qualified for the men’s individual all-around finals at the Paris Olympics.
Notably, the 20-year-old had confirmed his maiden Paris Olympic berth by finishing first in the men's all-around individual during the 2024 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials.
Fred Richard contributes to USA team's all-around bronze medal victory at Paris Olympics 2024
Fred Richard played an instrumental role in the United States’ bronze-medal triumph in the men’s team all-around event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Out of six apparatus, Richard performed on four as he earned scores of 14.466 on the floor exercise, 14.033 on the rings, 14.566 on the parallel bars, and 14.833 on the horizontal bars to contribute to the USA team’s total of 257.793.
The USA team came third only behind Japan and China’s men’s gymnastics team, who achieved overall scores of 259.594 and 259.062 points to take home the gold and silver medals. With this achievement, the USA men’s gymnastics team secured their first medal in 16 years in the event, since their bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In the women’s section, the USA gymnastics team delivered a commanding performance in the finals, scoring 171.296 points. With the likes of Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey in the team, the USA won their fourth gold medal in the history of the Olympics in this discipline.
