Jade Carey suffers a dramatic fall in floor exercise during the qualification round at Paris Olympics 2024

As the Olympics campaign commenced for the USA women's gymnastics team, Jade Carey suffered a fall on Day 1 of the qualification events. Carey, along with her teammates Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and Suni Lee, competed in the qualification round on July 28, 2024.

The 24-year-old secured her spot to compete at the 2024 Games after securing second place behind Biles in the floor exercise at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Gymnastic Trials, collecting 28.225 points. She was one of the favorites on the floor and began her routine with a powerful start until an unexpected event unfolded before the fans.

As Carey reached the end of her routine, she took a controlled run, attempting a series of four flips and turns. However, she fell over backwards onto the floor at the very end of her sequence.

Owing to the unfortunate event, Carey only scored a total of 10.633 points, dropping her into 30th place. Biles topped the apparatus with 14.600 points and was followed by Chiles, who scored 13.866 points.

A few minutes after the unfortunate and unexpected incident, Carey shrugged off the fall and displayed her exceptional skills on the vault, bagging 14.433 points to stand second behind Biles' 15.300 points.

Jade Carey secured a gold medal in the floor exercise at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after posting 14.366 points. The American gymnast secured a silver and a bronze medal at the 2017 and 2022 World Championships in the floor exercise, respectively.

Despite her impressive record of performances, she has occasionally faced struggles with twisties, a phenomenon when the gymnast's body and mind are no longer in sync while performing a routine in the air.

She opened up about her battle with twisties in an interview with Elle:

"It’s something a lot of us go through," Carey said. "A few years ago, I was learning all of these harder elite tumbling passes, and I started to confuse the two harder passes that I was learning. So it resulted in me not knowing where I was in the air and getting really confused"
"I always handled those situations by taking a step back, going back to the basics, building it back up again, or going into the pit until you feel really 100 percent confident."

Jade Carey will be seen competing in the vault final along with Simone Biles on August 3, 2024.
