WATCH: Noah Lyles runs fastest 100m ever at London Diamond League ahead of Paris Olympics
American sprinter Noah Lyles clocked a personal best in the 100m dash at the London Diamond League on July 20. This dominant win at London Stadium comes just six days before the Paris Olympics, where he looks to solidify his place among the world's elite.
He recently booked his ticket to the Paris Olympics in both the 100m and 200m dashes, clocking times of 9.83s and 19.53s, respectively, at the US trials. There, he trounced arch rivals Kenny Bednarek, Fred Kerley, and Christian Coleman to secure his spot. At the London Diamond League, Lyles continued his dominance, yet again surpassing Jamaican rival Oblique Seville's 100m personal best.
He produced a dominant performance in the 100m race, clocking 9.81s, his fastest time ever, just ahead of the Paris Olympics. He defeated his competitors, Akani Simbine and Lestile Tobago, who finished second and third with respective timings of 9.86s and 9.88s.
Tobago led the race at the beginning, but Lyles gained significant momentum at the halfway point and went on to win. Here is the video of the terrific showdown between Noah Lyles and his 100m rivals at the London Diamond League:
Noah Lyles opens up about breaking Tyson Gay's 100m American record
Noah Lyles recently made a bold claim while speaking to Track World News ahead of the Paris Olympics. He stated that his coach, Lance Brauman, told him in 2022 that he could break the 200m American record, which he eventually surpassed at the US trials. The 27-year-old now claims that his coach has said the same thing regarding the 100-meter dash.
"In 2022, coach came up later in the season and told me 'I think you could break the American record in the 200m and we did it and he's come up to me and told me he believes that I can break the American record in the 100m." Noah Lyles said.
He further stated that, given his increased speed and skill, he will win the 100m event at the Olympics in Paris whether or not he breaks the record.
"That's a hard pill to swallow for other competitors," Lyles added.
Following lowering his personal best to 9.81 seconds, Noah Lyles will next be seen competing against the likes of Jamaican athletes Kishane Thompson, Oblique Seville, and others at the Paris Olympics, scheduled for July 26–August 11.
