WATCH: Sha'Carri Richardson perfects her block starts with Christian Coleman ahead of 100m battle against Julien Alfred at Diamond League Finals
Sha'Carri Richardson was spotted perfecting her block starts ahead of the 100m final at the Diamond League Finals in Brussels. The reigning world champion lined up with training partners Christian Coleman and Brandon Hicklin on a wet track in Brussels.
Richardson ran the 100m only once before the start of the U.S. Olympic Trials in June. She clocked an impressive 10.83s at the Prefontaine Classic to announce herself as the gold medal contender. Following the Olympic Trials, Richardson was deemed an overwhelming favorite with Jamaican stars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah struggling with injuries.
The 24-year-old ran a blistering 10.71s at the Trials, which is still the fastest time in 2024 by a female sprinter. However, Richardson fell to her poor block start in the 100m finals at the Paris Olympics, causing her to settle for silver in 10.87s, behind Julien Alfred, who won the gold after clocking 10.72s.
With another big trophy on the line, Richardson wouldn't want to repeat the mistake in Brussels and was seen training her block starts with Christian Coleman and Brandon Hicklin.
Coleman is the world record holder in the men's 60m dash and is regarded as one of the best starters in history.
Sha'Carri Richardson lined up on the left of Coleman while Hicklin was on the right and as soon as the gun went off, the 60m indoor World Champion was in front. Richardson did relatively better, getting into her drive phase smoothly.
The 24-year-old looked in top form after beating Alfred in Zurich last week and would look to continue her dominance.
Sha'Carri Richardson has had a rollercoaster journey in track and field
Sha'Carri Richardson has been through a rollercoaster of a journey in track and field. After becoming a global sensation in 2021 following her collegiate performances and quick time at the Olympic Trials, Richardson's world came crashing down less than a week later after she tested positive for THC, and was suspended for a month, causing her to miss the Tokyo Olympics.
However, she would reclaim that fame and respect in 2023, winning the world title in a championship record of 10.65s. Speaking to Vogue in July this year, Sha'Carri said:
“Every time you step on the track, it’s a validation of the time you’ve put in, the sacrifices you make on the daily. When I get on the blocks, it’s about getting the job done. I know there’s joy at the other end, at the finish line. But I also know I’ve got to earn that happiness," she said.
A year later, Richardson was an overwhelming favorite to win the gold medal in Paris and get her redemption. While she could only clinch the silver medal in the 100m, a week later, Richardson stormed to the finish line in the women's 4x100m relay, winning her maiden Olympic gold medal featuring an iconic stare-down with Daryll Neita.
