WATCH: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone dominates Jamaica's Stacey Ann Williams and rest of 400m invitational field at Brussels Diamond League
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was at her best yet again as the American sprinter dominated the women's 400m invitational field at the Brussels Diamond League 2024. The 25-year-old clocked an impressive 49.11s to take the victory and was the only runner to breach the 50-second mark.
McLaughlin-Levrone started off her 2024 season in April, running in a 4x100m race. She competed over the 100m hurdles next before racing in two 200m dashes. The 25-year-old finally opened in her premier event, the 400m hurdles, at the Edwin Moses Legends before running a blistering 400m flat at New York's Icahn Stadium.
She clocked 48.75s in New York which marked the second fastest time of her career, just 0.1s off her personal best and 0.04s off the American record. McLaughlin-Levrone had only run the 400m hurdles since then and following double gold medal triumph in Paris, the four-time Olympic gold has now once again showcased her prowess in the flat race.
McLaughlin-Levrone got off to her usual quick start before settling in the middle. The 25-year-old was in the lead nearly through the course of the 400m, crossing the finish line well ahead of the rest of the field in 49.11s. Jamaica's Stacey Ann Williams was second in 50.53s, while Andrea Miklos of Romania was third in 51.16s
The four-time Olympic gold medalist had claimed that she would have liked to break her personal bests in Brussels but it wasn't to be. Nonetheless, her time of 49.11s would have won her the Diamond League title as well, as Marileidy Paulino crossed the finish line in 49.45s.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone grateful for Paris Olympics campaign
After breaking the world record first at the Olympic Trials and then at the Paris Olympics, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said she was "grateful" for her time in the French capital.
“I feel enormously grateful for what I was able to experience in Paris. After that, we returned to Los Angeles. But because I still feel physically and mentally fresh, I wanted to run one more meeting to finish the season," she said (via Athletics Weekly)
McLaughlin-Levrone also termed her time at the Olympics as ‘fantastic’ and added that she went to Greece after the Summer Games with her husband Andre Levrone for a short trip.
“I went to Greece with my husband to relax for a week. It was necessary after those fantastic Olympics, which I worked towards for so long," the 25-year-old added
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will be the favorite yet again in the 200m invitational which is scheduled for 14th September. She will face a slightly slower field yet again but should expect some fight from Tasa Jiya and Boglárka Takacs.
