WATCH: 'Unreal' Simone Biles hits a perfect Yurchenko Double Pike during podium training at Paris Olympics 2024
Simone Biles hit a perfect Yurchenko Double Pike routine during the podium training at the Paris Olympics 2024. The skill is done on vault and Biles is the only one in history to land the routine in an international competition.
Yurchenko Double Pike is also named ‘Biles II on Vault’, and the seven-time Olympic medalist performed it for the first time at the 2021 U.S. Classic. Biles didn't perform in an international competition until the 2023 World Championships, where she landed with some help from coach Cecile Landi.
However, following the World Championships, Biles landed the routine multiple times in the 2024 domestic competitions. Now, the most decorated gymnast in the history of the sport is ready to mesmerize the world with her skills at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Simone Biles recently landed the Yurchenko Double Pike during the podium training at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While USA Gymnastics termed it ‘unreal’, her coach, Cecile Landi called it the most ‘perfect’ landing of the skill.
Biles rose incredibly high after touching the vault before making the two full rotations in a pike position. The high jump was followed by an effortless landing as her fellow gymnasts and a small audience at the Bercy Arena looked on in awe of the reigning all-around world champion's greatness.
Simone Biles is ready for ‘redemption’ at the Paris Olympics 2024
Simone Biles' 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaign wasn't the one anyone expected. After qualifying for finals in most of the events, the 27-year-old had to withdraw because of the twisties, where Biles’ mind and body weren't in sync while airborne.
Following a nearly two-year-long break, Biles returned to competition, and at the 2023 World Championships, she scripted history. The seven-time Olympic medalist won a record sixth all-around world title and is now ready to conquer the Olympic stage and get her ‘redemption’ of the underwhelming 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaign.
Biles said after the U.S. Trials:
"This is definitely a redemption tour. I feel like we all have more to give. Our Tokyo (Olympics) performances weren't the best. We weren't under the best circumstances either, but I feel like we have a lot of weight on our shoulders to go up there and prove we are better athletes and more mature and smarter and we are more consistent."
Simone Biles will be a favorite for gold medals in the all-around, floor exercise, and vault competitions. But one can't count her out on the balance beam and uneven bars as well, and given her form, the sweep is also a possibility.
