"We got the scolding of our lives"- When Simone Biles opened up about her childhood mischief that made her mother very disappointed
Simone Biles vividly recalled the moment she and her sister, Adria disappointed their mother after an innocent childhood game went wrong. In her memoir -Courage to Soar, published in 2016, the gymnast discussed the different childhood games she played with her sister.
Simone also talked about the time when they noticed a misplaced rock in the backyard. Curious, she tossed it over the tall wooden fence separating their yard from the neighbor's property. To her and Adria's amusement, the rock landed with a splash in the neighbor's pool. The simple act became a game as the sisters climbed the fence to perfect their aim. For days, they threw stones into the water, unaware they were causing damage to the pool's filter.
Their playful mischief came to an abrupt end when the neighbor caught them red-handed. Furious, he confronted them, warning he would report their actions to their parents.
When her adoptive mother, Nellie Biles learned of the incident, she was deeply disappointed. Simone and Adria were scolded not just for their actions, but also for denying the truth when confronted. Reflecting on the moment, the gymnast wrote,
"After the man left, we got the scolding of our lives, not just for throwing the rocks in the man's pool, but also for lying about it."
Adria is one of the Simone Biles' four biological siblings. The sisters share a close bond, along with their older brother, Ron Biles Jr., and older sister, Ashley Biles Thomas.
Simone Biles reflects on the close bond with her younger sisters
Simone Biles and her siblings were placed in foster care after their biological mother, Shanon Biles, struggled with alcoholism and drug abuse. During their time in foster care, the Olympic champion recalled that while there were challenges, they were fortunate to stay together as siblings- something that isn't always the case for children in similar situations.
In the Facebook Watch series, 'Simone vs. Herself,' posted on June 29, 2021, Adria Biles said that despite frequent fights, which included hair-pulling and disagreements, the gold medalist remained her best friend.
In the series, the decorated gymnast also reflected on the experience, noting that while she didn't remember much about their time in foster care, she knew they had been taken from their biological mother. She also highlighted the bond between her and her siblings, particularly with Adria, was crucial during this difficult time.
Simone Biles said:
"I wanted to take care of Adria, obviously, because she was the baby. And I just felt like I needed to look out for her, because if family doesn't look out for you, who is going to?" (14:00)
Adria then recalled that while she initially thought her older sister was 'so bossy' growing up, she now understands that her sister's behavior was driven by a desire to protect her.
Nellie Biles- their adoptive mother, mentioned that the Olympic champion has always been nurturing toward her younger sister, and their close bond has remained strong to this day.
