What is the Repechage round in track and field at Paris Olympics 2024? Explaining the newly introduced rule

Repechage round in the context of track and field can be defined as a second chance or second round that athletes get upon failing to qualify for the semis in the first round of the events. The system was introduced in Olympics track and field for the first time in 2024 after receiving approval from World Athletics.

This new round in between the first round and semifinals of an event in the Olympics will give every athlete competing in the respective event a cushion to qualify for the semifinals even after failing in the first round.

This new system is in contrast to the system that was followed three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics where the top three position holders from every heat of the first round directly qualify for the semifinal and the other slots of the semis were filled considering the run time of those athletes outside the top three position.

The 2024 Olympics in Paris will have repechage rounds for various events, namely, 200m sprints, 400m sprints, 800m sprints, 1500m sprints, Men's 110m hurdles, Women's 400m Hurdles and Women's 100m hurdles.

Following a change in the format of the track and field competition in the Paris Olympics 2024, World Athletics President, Sebastian Cole remarked about the benefits that the addition of a new round will bring to the discipline of track and field. He stated (via Flotrack):

"The repechage rounds will give more exposure to our sport during the peak Olympic period and will be carefully scheduled to ensure that every event on our Olympic program retains its share of the spotlight."
