When are Jakob Ingebrigtsen and 1500m champion Cole Hocker racing next? All about their upcoming head-to-head contest after the Paris Olympics
The 1500m event witnessed a thrilling finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with Cole Hocker becoming the Olympic champion and Jakob Ingebrigtsen finishing outside the podium. These two unexpected outcomes were the most surprising storylines from the race.
While many expected a close contest between the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Ingebrigtsen and Great Britain’s Josh Kerr, Hocker from the United States stunned the pre-race favorites to take home the gold medal. However, Kerr bagged the silver medal with a personal best and national record time of 3:27.79.
Meanwhile, Ingebrigtsen, who had a different strategy by leading the 1500m race initially, eventually lost steam by the final lap and finished fourth with a time of 3:28.24.
After his disappointing loss in the 1500m event, Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be racing next in his main event at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he will be going head-to-head against the reigning Olympic champion Cole Hocker. A few other athletes to watch out for are the 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot and Hobbs Kessler, who placed fifth in the Paris Olympic finals.
Ingebrigtsen will be participating in the Lausanne Diamond League set to commence on August 22, 2024, in a bid to collect Diamond League points and attempt to make it to the finals of the 2024 Wanda Diamond League finals, slated to take place in Brussels on September 13-14 this year.
Last year, he claimed the Diamond League titles in both the men’s 1500m and 3000m events, delivering sensational performances with Diamond League records and personal bests of 3:43.73 and 7:23.63.
Meanwhile, Cole Hocker’s best performance in a Diamond League final came at the Prefontaine Classic in September 2023, where he competed in the mile. Despite not having enough Diamond League points, he qualified as a national wildcard, a spot given to the host nation for an athlete with a strong standing.
There, he achieved a personal best of 3:48.08, also the fourth-fastest time by an American over the distance.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen bounces back to win 5000m gold at Paris Olympics
After a heartbreaking loss in the men’s 1500m, Jakob Ingebrigtsen redeemed himself in the men’s 5000m with a dominant show, clocking a season-best performance with 13:13.66.
Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi and Grant Fisher of the United States finished behind Ingebrigtsen, with times of 13:15.04 and 13:15.13 to win the silver and bronze respectively.
It is worth noting that Ingebrigtsen has also been a dominant performer in the world over the 5000m distance as he is a two-time world champion in the event, having clinched the titles in the 2022 and 2023 editions.
