Who is Carlos Yulo? All about the Filipino gymnast who clinched the gold medal in the floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics
Carlos Yulo is a Filipino gymnast who clinched a gold medal in the men's floor exercise event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Saturday. After narrowly missing out on a bronze medal by just 0.017 points in the vault finals in Tokyo, Yulo posted a staggering 15.000 points in the event final to become the first Filipino gymnast to win an Olympic gold.
Although Yulo's difficulty score was 6.600 his superb execution during the performance earned him a staggering 8.400 points. He finished 0.034 points clear of Israel's Artem Dolgopyat, who took the silver medal in the competition with 14.966 points. Great Britain's Jake Jarman clinched the bronze medal with 14.933 points.
Carlos Yulo: Family and hometown
Yulo was born in the Malate district of Manilla, Philippines on February 16, 2000. His family includes his parents- Mark Andrew Yulo and Angelica Yulo and three other siblings- Joriel Yulo, Karl Jahrel Eldrew, and Elaiza Andriel. His younger brothers Karl Yulo and Elaiza Yulo are also involved in the discipline of gymnastics.
Carlos Yulo: Educational background
Yulo completed his primary schooling at the Aurora A. Quezon Elementary High School, following which he was admitted to the Adamson University, Ermita, for higher education.
Following his move to Japan under a scholarship program (granted by the Japan Olympic Association) in 2016, Yulo took admission to Teikyo University from which he completed a degree in literature. He also trained at the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines in Manila in his early days.
Carlos Yulo: Career Overview
Yulo started competing in gymnastics tournaments at the age of eight. Besides dominating the Southeast Asian gymnastic circuit with ten gold medals at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and nine gold medals at the Southeast Asian games, Yulo has also fostered his name in global competitions such as the World Championships.
The 24-year-old has clinched six World Championship medals so far in his career, including two gold medals in the floor exercise and vaults in 2019 and 2021 respectively. Besides, Yulo has also clinched five top podium finishes at the FIG Apparatus World Cup.
