Who is Leonardo Fabbri? All about Italian shot putter who defeated 2-time Olympic champ Ryan Crouser at London Diamond League before Paris Olympics

Leonardo Fabbri is an Italian shot putter who recently defeated the reigning Olympic champion, Ryan Crouser. The incident took place on Saturday, July 20, during the London Diamond League meet.

Crouser was one of the favorites to win the shot put event in London considering his performances throughout the season till now. However, Fabbri had some other ideas, as he managed a mark of 22.52m on his fifth attempt to clinch the top position at the London Stadium.

Even though it was 0.43m short of his best performance this season at Savona, it was enough for Fabbri to get his first Diamond League meet victory in the 2024 season.

Crouser's best attempt to glory in London also came during his fifth attempt when he managed a mark of 22.37m. However, it was not enough for the two-time Olympic medalist who had to settle for the second position while his countryman, Otterdahl Payton secured the third position with a mark of 22.13 during his third attempt.

Fabbri was born in Bagna a Ripoli in Italy on April 14, 1997. His father Fabio was a track and field athlete and was the major driving force behind his endeavours in athletics. However, no information is available to the public about Fabbri's mother.

Fabbri's major educational proceedings came at the hotel management school in Italy. Besides education, he also has a keen interest in other sports such as soccer and Italian music.

Fabbri had been one of the standout athletes when it came to the European circuit. The 27-year-old has represented Italy in various global tournaments be it during his youth career or senior days.

During this process, Fabbri has numerous laurels in his cabinet, including a gold medal at the 2024 edition of the European Championships in Rome. The Italian also won a silver medal last year at the World Athletics Championships after falling short behind Ryan Crouser.

His other achievements across his career till now also include a bronze at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow and a silver medal at the European U23 Championships. Besides, he has also won four national titles (Italian Athletics Championships) in 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024, respectively.
