Paris Olympics: USA win men's relay gold, women's 4x100m free relay and women's 400m freestyle
Team USA opened their swimming medal haul at the Paris Olympics on Saturday (July 27). They won a total of five medals, one gold, two silver, and two bronze. The women's 400m freestyle was the first blockbuster event of the day.
With Summer McIntosh, Ariarne Titmus, and Katie Ledecky going head-to-head, excitement in the build-up reached fever pitch. Australian Titmus started strong and stayed in front throughout to clinch the gold medal in 3:57.49.
Canada's McIntosh finished second without much of a challenge in 3:58.37 while American Ledecky had to fight for the bronze medal. At one point in the race, her Paige Madden looked certain to finish third before Ledecky turned on the afterburners and took the final spot on the podium, clocking 4:00.86.
In the women's 4x100m freestyle relay, Australia's Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon, and Meg Harris won the gold medal. They broke their own Olympic record with a 3:28.52 effort to win the country’s first gold medal in Paris.
The American quartet of Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torrie Huske, and Simone Manuel won the silver medal in an American record of 3:30.20. China's Yang Junxuan, Cheng Yujie, Zhang Yufei, and Wu Qingfeng won the bronze medal.
In the men's 4x100m relay, Team USA's Jack Alexy, Chris Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong, and Caeleb Dressel won the gold medal. They finished 1.07 seconds before Australia, who took home the silver in 3:10.35. Italy clinched the bronze medal. The USA has now the gold medal in this event in 11 of the last 14 editions of the Games.
