Meet U.S. Army sergeant Sagen Maddalena who won Team USA's first medal in shooting at the Paris Olympics
Sagen Maddalena is an American rifle shooter competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She won Team USA's first medal in shooting in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event at the quadrennial games.
Sagen Maddalena had qualified for the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event during the USA Shooting’s Smallbore Rifle/Pistol Olympic Trials-Part in March 2024. The U.S. Army sergeant scored 463.0 to clinch the silver medal in the shooting events, marking the country's first medal in the event at the Paris Olympics. She trailed behind Chiara Leone who won the gold medal with an Olympic record and an overall score of 464.4 points.
Previously, the U.S. Army sergeant posted 104.8, 104.2, 105.7, 105.8, 105.3, and 105.6 points in six series, respectively at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre on July 28, 2024, earning a spot in the finals. She finished fourth in the finals with an overall score of 207.7 points.
Sagen Maddalena shooting career's commencement
Born in Woodland, California, Sagen Maddalena commenced her shooting career on the California Grizzlies junior team, where she competed in service rifles. She attended her first Civilian Marksmanship Program in 2010 in Ohio and was honored as a Distinguished Rifleman by the program in 2011.
She went on to represent the University of Alaska Fairbanks Rifle Team from 2013-18 and earned multiple NRA First Team All-American, and NRA First Team All-American in Smallbore. The shooter pursued a Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management
Sagen Maddalena's serves as the U.S. Army's sergeant
Maddalena enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 2019. She later earned a spot in the U.S. Army Marksman Unit. The American shooter also serves as an instructor in the unit.
She competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, representing the USA Shooting Team in the women's 50m 3 position event. The U.S. Army sergeant had to settle in fifth place after posting a score of 427.8 points.
Sagen Maddalena's achievements
Maddalena's shooting career so far has been filled with multiple international feats. She secured a gold and a bronze in the team 50m 3 position and women's 50m 3 position event at the 2022 Cairo and 2023 Baku World Championships, respectively. At the 2022 World Championships, she also clinched a gold medal in the 50m rifle prone mixed team events.
The American shooter has three World Cup Final medals, four World Cup medals, and two Pan American Games medals, both of which she won at the 2023 edition.
