Will Jill Biden lead the U.S. Delegation at Paris Olympics 2024? Everything about the First Lady's participation at the quadrennial event
First Lady Jill Biden will be leading the U.S. Delegation during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. This will be the first time Jill Biden will be making a public appearance since President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the United States presidential race.
Biden will head the U.S. delegation for the second time, having previously served as the delegation's leader during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which was her inaugural solo international trip as First Lady.
Besides the First Lady, the USA delegation at the opening ceremony will also feature Denise Campbell Bauer, U.S. Ambassador to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco, senators Chris Coons (Delaware) and Alex Padilla (California), Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, and Casey Wasserman, the chairperson of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Two retired athletes - Olympic champion in figure skating, Brian Boitano and three-time women’s basketball gold medalist Dawn Staley, will also be a part of the seven-member USA delegation for the quadrennial games. President Joe Biden announced the confirmed members of the delegations for both the opening and closing ceremonies on July 22, 2024, in a statement released on the White House website.
Douglas Emhoff, who is the husband of Kamala Harris, will lead the U.S. delegation at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Harris, the current vice-president, is now vying to become the Democratic Party's nominee for the Presidential election.
Notably, the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics is set to be different from all the other editions of the Summer Olympic Games. Instead of taking place inside a stadium, the ceremony will take place on the Seine River in Paris.
What makes the event unique is there will be a parade of boats rather than athletes walking on a track stadium while viewers will watch the event from the banks of the river.
LeBron James will be the USA’s male flagbearer for the Paris Olympics
Basketball legend LeBron James has been announced as the United States’ male flag bearer for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This will be the NBA legend’s fourth Olympic appearance, having represented the nation at the 2004, 2008, and 2012 editions of the Summer Games. Meanwhile, the women’s flagbearer for the Olympic Games hasn't been announced yet.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, baseball player Eddy Alvarez and basketball athlete Sue Bird served as the male and female flag bearers for the quadrennial games.
