In their RO16 match, Hughes and Cheng defeated Italy's Valentina Gottardi and Marta Menegatti by a scoreline of 2-1 on Monday (August 5) to advance to the quarterfinals.

The US duo got off a flying start with a 21-18 win over the Italians but Gottardi and Menegatti came back strongly in the second set with a 21-17 win to set up a decisive third set. Hughes and Cheng closed out the win after taking the final set 15-12.

The duo will next face a stern challenge in Switzerland's Nina Brunner and Tanja Huberli who have clinched all their wins in the Women's Beach Volleyball event at the Paris Olympics by a 2-0 margin.
