"This is how you eat…how you’re gonna take care of family”- When Sha'Carri Richardson opened up on high stakes of going pro & weight of responsibility
Sha'Carri Richardson once opened up about how turning professional involves numerous personal and professional challenges. She added how the stakes become higher and the weight of responsibility increases upon becoming pro.
On the Running Things podcast via TEMPO Journal in October 2020, Richardson was asked about the biggest difference in intensity between college athletics and the professional training environment, particularly regarding the shift in seriousness, given that it deals with people’s careers and livelihoods.
The American sprinter reacted to this by explaining how in college, she ran to maintain her scholarship and support her teammates, but it became different when she turned professional, adding (5:22 onwards):
“Definitely in college, you was just running to keep your scholarship. You was running to make sure you know you kept the same amount and you was running for your teammates. You know, the motivation was different.”
She further explained her views that the stakes become higher because her success determines whether she can provide for herself and her loved ones, adding:
“It was still a motivation, but it wasn't as severe as I feel like on this level because being professional, this is how you eat, this is how you live, this is how you're gonna take care of your family. I definitely that's definitely the biggest. My biggest motivation is being able to take care of the ones that have taken care of me, are the ones that I love. So, I definitely feel like professional stakes are definitely more higher. So, when you sit at the table, it's all or nothing.”
Sha'Carri Richardson added how not just her coach Dennis Mitchell, but the above factors have pushed her both physically and mentally to achieve great things in her career.
“So, I definitely feel on this level, it’s pushed me not just physically. Dennis Mitchell has not only pushed me physically but the entire experience has pushed me mentally.”
Sha'Carri Richardson opens up on her emotional moment during 4x100m relay podium at Paris Olympics
After anchoring the United States to a gold medal win in the women’s 4x100m relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sha'Carri Richardson reflected on the emotional moment when she stood on the podium. In an interview with Refinery29, she was questioned on what that moment meant to her. She said:
“Getting emotional on the podium, that was not a plan, that was not scripted [laughs]. I would honestly say that moment was just a full circle moment, just embracing everything, not even including what had happened in the general moment to make it on the podium, but just embracing the entire journey of being just a human and growing, not even just as an athlete, but as a woman, as a spirit... I was just embracing those two things at that moment to show that this is literally only the beginning.”
The 24-year-old concluded her maiden Olympic appearance with gold in relay and a silver in the individual 100m race, clocking a time of 10.87s, behind Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred (10.72s).
