Angel Reese reacts to former coach Teresa Weatherspoon's electrifying reception from Liberty fans at Barclays Center
Chicago Sky star Angel Reese seemingly found it heartwarming when New York Liberty fans erupted in cheers as Teresa Weatherspoon was shown on the jumbotron at Barclays Center, just days after her dismissal as the Sky's head coach.
Weatherspoon, who led the rebuilding Sky to a 13-27 record during the 2024 season, spent all but one season of her playing career with the Liberty. From 1997 to 2003, she appeared in five All-Star games and remains the Liberty's all-time leader in assists and steals.
The Barclays Center crowd enthusiastically cheered for the former Liberty guard, who seemed visibly moved by the warm reception.
Angel Reese took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her feelings, reposting a clip of the moment and captioning it with a heart and teary-eyed emoji.
Weatherspoon won the Defensive Player of the Year award in each of her first two seasons. She averaged 5.7 points, 5.9 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game for the Liberty, starting all 220 of her games there.
In her final season, she played for the LA Sparks as a reserve, coming off the bench and seeing limited minutes.
Angel Reese ‘heartbroken’ after Teresa Weatherspoon’s dismissal
Following the news of Teresa Weatherspoon's dismissal as Chicago Sky’s head coach after just one season, Angel Reese shared an emotional post on X, expressing her heartbreak and gratitude for the coach's belief in her.
“I’m heartbroken,” Reese said. “I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me.”
Despite a tumultuous season that saw the Sky miss the playoffs for the first time since 2018, Reese praised Weatherspoon for always having faith, even when the odds were stacked against them.
“Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a Black woman in sports when nobody believes in you," Reese said. "You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed.”
Reese called Weatherspoon an "unsung hero" and reflected on the deep impact the coach had on her life.
“I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever,” Reese shared. “You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon.”
The Sky have yet to name a replacement for Weatherspoon.
