Emma Meesseman leads Belgium to a near-impossible feat against Japan
Meesseman and her Belgium team lost their first two games of the Olympic pool matches against USA and Germany. The defending EuroBasket champions were considered out of the Olympic quarterfinals with just one hope: winning the next game by at least 27 points.
Emma Meesseman and her teammates ended the first quarter against Japan with a 19-7 lead. Before the fourth quarter began, Belgium had taken a 61-39 lead over its opponents. However, they were still short of getting the 27-point win. Elise Ramette hit two consecutive threes to give her team a 30-point lead, but the Japanese team cut the lead time and again.
Nevertheless, Meesseman didn’t let her team get eliminated. She scored the last six of her team’s eight points in the 85-58 win. Meesseman scored 30 points on 14 of 21 shots from the field. She also registered 11 rebounds, four assists and five blocks in the game.
