Breanna Stewart offers emotional condolences to late NY Liberty Timeless Torchers performer
On Tuesday, New York Liberty superstar Breanna Stewart paid tribute to another New York legend, sharing an emotional condolence message for the late Denise Bellog. Bellog was a member of the popular Timeless Torches, a dance group which consists of men and women over the age of 40 that support the Liberty through their lively and spirited performances.
This will be a tough week for Liberty coaches, players and fans with the passing of Bellog. The New York Liberty sent their condolences with a message on Instagram on Tuesday and Stewart later shared the message on her account along with a dove and heart emoji.
The Timeless Torches first started to perform in 2005 and have grown nationally. They have been featured on television shows such as Good Morning America and 30 Rock, and performed at several WNBA All-Star games.
Liberty fans who attended games over the last two decades will be very familiar with the Timeless Torches, and were lucky enough to see Denise in action. Bellog had been a member of the Timeless Torches for 16 years. She grew up in New Jersey and has a background in theatre dance.
Bellog often spoke about her love for the performing arts and teaching dance. In an article from Business Insider on Oct. 31, she shared that she used to teach during the week at middle schools and high schools, and then wake up at 8 a.m. on weekends to teach some more. She decided to audition for the Timeless Torches 16 years ago after seeing an advertisement and has been a regular ever since.
Breanna Stewart dedicates playoff win over Aces to wife Marta Xargay and her late father
Breanna Stewart had a tremendous year from a professional standpoint. The 30-year-old was a member of the USA women's Olympic team that won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and followed that up by guiding the Liberty to their first ever WNBA championship in October.
Stewart was outstanding throughout the playoffs and, after defeating the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA semifinal, she dedicated her performance to her wife, Marta Xargay, and her late father who passed away the previous year.
"I have the receipts on the things that were said. My mentality today was to go and get the win for my wife and her dad," Stewart said.
The Liberty faced off against the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Finals, triumphing in a five-game series to bring the championship trophy back to the Big Apple for the first time.
