It was a showdown between one of the league’s bottom teams and the top contender when the Dallas Wings and New York Liberty faced each other on Monday. Despite missing Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty cruised to a 94-74 victory over the Wings, thanks to standout performances from Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart.
The Liberty jumped out to a 26-16 lead in the first quarter, with Stewart contributing 10 points. She was crucial in setting the tone for New York, making shot after shot.
In the second quarter, New York kept its advantage even as Arike Ogunbowale scored 11 points for the Wings, including two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.
Despite the Wings’ efforts to close the gap, the Liberty maintained a nine-point lead at halftime, 48-39.
Stewart remained dominant, adding 10 more points in the third quarter.
The Dallas Wings tried to chip away at the lead with key plays from Satou Sabally, who scored nine points in the quarter, including two 3-pointers. Ogunbowale also added a couple of free throws and a driving floater, but the Liberty’s lead held steady at nine, 69-60.
In the fourth quarter, the Liberty demonstrated their dominance and closed the game with a decisive run. After Dallas cut the deficit to just four points with a couple of baskets by Sabally, the Liberty answered back emphatically.
The turning point came when Jonquel Jones made a driving layup, assisted by Courtney Vandersloot, pushing the Liberty’s lead to 71-65. Following a steal by Kayla Thornton, the Liberty capitalized with a close-range shot from Vandersloot. The momentum continued as Jones drained a 3-pointer, bringing the lead back to double digits, 76-65.
The Liberty’s defense tightened, forcing turnovers and missed shots from the Wings. Kennedy Burke added a driving layup, and Jones continued to dominate, making it 80-65.
The run was capped off by Vandersloot’s layup off another steal and a basket by Jones, bringing the score to 90-70 with just over a minute left. Dallas managed a few more points, but it wasn’t enough to erase the Liberty’s commanding lead. The game concluded with a 94-74 victory for the Liberty.
Stewart finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Jones contributed 23 points and 12 rebounds. Vandersloot added 15 points and 11 assists.
For the Wings, it was Sabally’s 24 points that kept the game competitive until the fourth quarter. Ogunbowale added 17 points, and Natasha Howard chipped in with 13.
The Liberty improved to 24-4 on the season, while the Wings fell to a 6-21 slate.
