$383,670 Liberty guard makes her feelings clear on opting for free agency

The New York Liberty secured the WNBA title last season, but could be without one of their key contributors when they kickstart their title defense.

Back in 2023, Courtney Vandersloot inked a two-year deal with the Liberty worth $383,670. She is set to hit the open market this offseason and appears ready to test all options.

During a recent media availability, she opened up on her impending free agency. She said her main focal points are being valued and being able to play the way she feels she's capable of.

"I want to be valued. I want to be competitive," Vandersloot said. "I want to have the ball in my hands and be able to create the way that I think that I can, you know, and just be in a place that is comfortable for me and my family.”

Vandersloot, a former All-Star, saw her playing time and production take a sizable dip in 2024. Across 31 games for the Liberty, she averaged 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists. The 35-year-old only averaged 22.3 minutes per game, the lowest of her career.

In the twilight of her career, Vandersloot will now test the market in hopes of landing somewhere she can still be a key contributor.

Courtney Vandersloot will attempt to increase her value in Unrivaled

Coming off a season where her production took a noticeable dip, Courtney Vandersloot might have a tough time on the free-agent market. However, she finds herself with an interesting opportunity to increase her value.

Over the past year, Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier have been building a new women's basketball league. Their hard work is about to pay off, as Unrivaled is set to debut later this month.

The new three-on-three league features 36 WNBA players spread out across six clubs. Among those who inked a deal to compete is Vandersloot.

Similar to the WNBA, Vandersloot will be playing alongside Breanna Stewart in Unrivaled. They are part of "Mist Basketball Club" alongside Aaliyah Edwards, Rickea Jackson, DiJonai Carrington and Jewell Loyd. This group will be coached by former LA Lakers assistant Phil Handy.

Boasting one of the more talented rosters in Unrivaled, Mist will look to perform well in the inaugural season. This could greatly benefit someone like Vandersloot, who could boost her worth with strong performances.

The Mist are set to play the first-ever game in Unrivaled's history, facing off against the Lunar Owls on Jan. 17.
