Fans fear the worst for Chennedy Carter's future as former Angel Reese teammate remains unsigned: "Won’t see her again on a WNBA court"
The WNBA's Chennedy Carter remains unsigned in free agency. Despite coming off a terrific 2024 season, Carter still has not received any offers after her one-year, $76k deal with the Chicago Sky expired. Fans speculated that she might remain unsigned for the foreseeable future.
The Sky had the option to offer a qualifying extension to Carter leading up to the league's free agency. However, the organization opted not to exercise that possibility as the deadline was on Monday.
Amid the situation between the Sky and Carter, there were reports of issues in the team's locker room. According to Annie Costabile of the Sun-Times, the behavior of the former Atlanta Dream guard was the reason behind it.
“According to multiple league sources, players were unhappy with the dynamic created in the locker room last year due to Carter’s behavior, which went unchecked by former coach Teresa Weatherspoon,” Costabile wrote. “There was concern within the team regarding how re-signing Carter would impact the Sky’s chances of landing other free agents.”
This led fans on Reddit to speculate on what's next for Chennedy Carter's career.
However, some fans thought Carter might not find her way back to the league.
"I hope that I am wrong, but I am afraid that we won’t see her again on a WNBA court," a fan said.
"I wouldn’t be shocked if she doesn’t get picked up tbh," another fan said.
"She’s not going to be on a wnba team next season," one fan said.
Other fans believe that Carter will still get offered a contract in the league.
"Despite not being a huge fan of her on court and off court behaviors, I was of the opinion that her talent was such that a team or teams would pursue her," one fan said.
"Nobody really wants to deal with her, but Carter on the Fever would be kind of insane," another fan suggested.
"If she can have some 'humble pie' I think Aces could be great," a fan commented.
How did Chennedy Carter perform last season?
Chennedy Carter had a great 2024 campaign with the Sky. She played 33 games and was the team's leading scorer, averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists on 48.7% shooting from the field.
During the entire season, she was the only player to average at least 15 points. She also finished the campaign fourth in the Most Improved Player race. Her excellence on the court last season was reminiscent of her rookie season, where she finished as runner-up in the Rookie of the Year race.
