The Women's Olympic Knockout Round matchups are almost set, with the France vs Australia game set to be the final ball game of the group phase. Australia is coming off a five-point win against Canada after a disappointing 75-62 loss against Nigeria. France, on the other hand, secured their spot in the next round with a 2-0 record in the group phase.
France handled their business against Nigeria and Canada in a dominant fashion, winning both games 75-54 due to their efficient shotmaking and powerhouse rebounding at the rim. Meanwhile, Australia has a 1-1 record at this phase of the competition.
The Opals began the game with a nice assist from Alanna Smith to Ezi Magbegor in the paint for two points. Australia went on an 8-2 run around the 3:55 mark of the first quarter but their opponent responded well with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to just two points by the end of the quarter.
After tying the ball game up at 30 apiece with 4:32 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Iliana Rupert's three-point shot steered momentum in France's way. It would achieve a two-point lead by the 3:47 mark, courtesy of free throws from Mariame Badiane.
However, Australia would counter by tying the ball game up at 32 apiece, with 3:03 minutes to go in the second quarter.
The first half was filled with back-and-forth action, with France showcasing composure amid Australia's scoring display. The game was tied at 34-34, entering halftime.
Around the 4:33 mark in the third quarter, Australia’s Ezi Magbegor scored inside the paint to give her team a one-point lead. The team went on a 10-0 run from that point on to establish some much-needed momentum. It was the type of quarter-finish that Australia needed heading into the final stretch of the ball game.
Australia opened the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead after Sami Whitcomb made a nice mover under the rim. However, the team's opponent didn’t easily go away as they responded with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to just four points.
Cayla George's timely three-pointer at the 3:48 mark gave Australia a six-point lead that ended up being huge for the Australian ball club. Their opponent continued to get close with just a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Gabby Williams and Marine Johannes' three-pointers. Their clutch shotmaking led to just a two-possession game.
However, Cayla George would come up huge once again with a two-pointer to push Australia's lead to six points. Australia eventually closed the deal with a 79-72 win. They were led by Tess Madgen's 18-point performance.
