Germany Women's Basketball 2024 Paris Olympics: Full roster, schedule, and more

Germany’s women’s basketball team is going to the Summer Olympic Games for the first time. The Deutschland booked a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after placing second in a qualifying tournament in February. Wins against Serbia and host Brazil allowed the women to join the men’s team who earned a place in the competition by winning the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The women’s team is bannered by WNBA players Satou Sabally, Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich. They opened their preparation for the tournament in Paris with two exhibition games this week. The Germans handily won against Nigeria 77-63, but were run over by Team USA, the gold medal favorites, 84-57.

Germany’s women’s basketball isn’t a traditional powerhouse in the sport. But, coach Lisa Thomaidis’ group will be unfazed by what they will be squaring off against in Paris. They hope to enter the knockout round despite falling into a tough group in the preliminary stage.

Germany women’s basketball team schedule

Die Mannschaft is in Group C with Team USA, Japan and Belgium. Satou Sabally and Co. are the lowest-ranked team in their group. After the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgium, the Americans are No. 1 followed by the Belgians while the Japanese are No. 6. Lisa Thomaidis' group faces a daunting task to make it to the knockout round.

The Deutschland begins its Olympic campaign with a matchup against the loaded Belgians. Belgium came within a whisker of beating the Americans in the OQT early this year. They nearly won the tournament despite missing key players who are now healthy for the games in Paris.

Next up for Thomaidis’ team is Japan, the silver medal winner in the Tokyo Olympics. The Japanese are ranked sixth in FIBA’s world rankings. They are contenders for another podium finish in France.

The Germans cap off the preliminary stage with another showdown with Team USA. If the exhibition game in London was any indication, Satou Sabally and her teammates would need a miracle to beat the Americans.

Germany Women’s Basketball: Key players

#1. Satou Sabally

Satou Sabally won the 2023 WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year award. She was a big reason the Dallas Wings had their best season in over a decade. Sabally also earned an All-Star selection but couldn’t suit up for the Wings in the first half of the 2024 WNBA campaign. She is concentrating on the Olympics before returning to Dallas.

Sabally is arguably Die Mannschaft’s most talented player. She was the focus of the Americans’ strategy on defense. If she can’t regain the form from last year, the Germans will find it tough to win one game in Paris.

#2. Leonie Fiebich

The New York Liberty signed Leonie Fiebich because of her playmaking and shooting. She has also been Thomaidis’ most consistent player in the lead-up to the Olympics. The 6-foot-4 forward is another player who will have a key role for her team in Paris.
