"I don't feel like a celebrity" - Caitlin Clark opens up on coping with unexpected spotlight & newfound fame

Caitlin Clark has evolved from being a college star to being considered responsible for the popularity and new fans the WNBA has welcomed in 2024. The Indiana Fever rookie carried high expectations coming into the league, and she hasn't disappointed, taking her team from a 1-9 start to a playoff berth with a terrific surge to close out the campaign.

Clark's popularity has reached new heights during her first season, but she revealed she's not feeling that way ahead of the season finale at the Washington Mystics on Thursday night.

"I don't feel famous," Clark said. "I don't feel like a celebrity. That's not the way I approach my life. I still go to the grocery store. I still go and buy candles at the store, the fall spice candles. I still do all that stuff. I go and pick up food. People don't do that for me; that's not how I approach my life. I approach it the same exact way, and I feel like that goes back to the question prior.
"I feel like that's why people can connect with me, 'cause I feel like I'm real and authentic to them and try to be as normal as possible. I never try to seem superior to somebody, I try to be somebody that loves playing basketball, loves bringing people joy, and I feel very fortunate to do that."

She was already drawing a lot of attention with the Iowa Hawkeyes, but once she made it to the pros, Caitlin Clark's popularity went through the roof. The Fever broke attendance records for both home and away games, and they were involved in duels that broke viewership records for multiple networks.

Caitlin Clark can break records during Indiana Fever's last regular season game

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever already clinched a playoff berth, and they'll probably face the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the postseason. Before the big party starts, she'll have the chance to own three records after the final regular-season duel.

For starters, she's five free-throw attempts away from surpassing Tamika Catchings' single-season record (165). This mark was set 18 years ago, and Clark could make it hers tonight.

In addition, Caitlin Clark could break Kelsey Mitchell's record for the most points in an Indiana Fever season (763). Clark is two points behind her teammate.

Last, but not least, she could break the WNBA's single-season record for most 3-pointers. She's sitting at 120, eight less than Sabrina Ionescu's 3s from last season.
