"I don't hunt rebounds": A'ja Wilson makes humble statement after breaking Angel Reese's rebounding record
A'ja Wilson's ability to break records should come as no surprise to basketball fans at this point. In the Aces' 85-72 win on Tuesday against the Storm, she topped Angel Reese's record for most rebounds in a single season with 451 boards.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Callie Lawson-Freeman asked the MVP favorite about her thoughts on claiming the rebounding record.
"That's cool," Wilson said. "I don't hunt rebounds so it's not something that is always on my mind when it comes to just getting the basketball for my team. ... When it comes to getting them to get them, I'm not focused on that. I'm focused on putting the ball in the hoop. I mean, it's a blessing. This league is tough ..."
Accolades aside, Wilson made sure to let everyone know that stat-chasing is the last of her concerns. With the WNBA Playoffs commencing in a few days, Wilson has been a juggernaut at both ends of the floor to help her team win eight of their last nine games.
A'ja Wilson talked about reaching the 1000-point record in a single season
When A'ja Wilson made history this season with her 1,000-point record, she credited her work ethic and the precise preparation that regularly comes into play. Following Sunday's 84-71 victory against the Sun, Wilson reacted to her record-breaking performance, as per ESPN's Michael Voepel.
"I really have to credit my offseason work and my preparation," Wilson said. "I take time to get away from basketball, to let me miss it. So then when I'm in it, I don't take it for granted. My screensaver is, 'Rest at the end, not in the middle,' and that's something I tell myself every single day."
Wilson capped off her outing by dropping a stat line of 29 points (52.0% shooting), nine rebounds, and two blocks. It was a sensational performance right from the jump against the number-one-ranked defense in the league.
Despite how normal it is to hear A'ja Wilson performing at a level only a few professional athletes could hope to reach, she acknowledged that her accomplishments are not to be taken for granted.
