"Most egregious thing Sides has done all season": Fans slam Christie Sides after Kelsey Mitchell injury scare ahead of playoffs
Hoops fans, especially Indiana Fever supporters, were furious with coach Christie Sides after star player Kelsey Mitchell suffered a major injury scare during the team’s 92-91 loss to the Washington Mystics on Thursday. Fever fans were filled with anxiety as Mitchell left the court and headed to the locker room after seemingly injuring her left ankle in the first quarter.
Basketball fans criticized coach Christie Sides for failing to adjust the starting lineup in the final regular season game, despite the team having already secured the No. 6 seed.
One fan particularly condemned the decision, calling it "egregious" for not resting the star players ahead of the playoffs.
"So Kelsey Mitchell has an ankle injury and now won’t be 100% for the playoffs and for what? A few meaningless minutes against the Mystics? This is the most egregious thing Sides has done all season."
"She’s a f*cking idiot for this. I hope this is the straw that breaks the camels back and she gets fired," said a fan.
"Bro this is EGREGIOUS by the definition. She def deserves credit for the turn around but like you said very average coach. Two time CHAMPION. Head coach Becky Hammond testing her players and you do the opposite lol," read another comment.
One fan wrote the Fever should have started the game with a completely different lineup.
"Completely ridiculous if the fever were just going to concede the game all the starters should have been benched."
"And now she has CC and AB in there. Mystics are playing for their lives for that playoff spot. They’re going hard. There’s no need to risk it," wrote another fan.
"She’s just so f*cking bad. They’ve done this well in spite of her," commented another X user.
Kelsey Mitchell Injury
Kelsey Mitchell was slow to get up after a collision with a Washington Mystics player under the basket in the first quarter. Despite the impact, the two-time WNBA All-Star managed to continue moving up and down the court.
However, the veteran guard later appeared to shake out her left ankle, showing signs of discomfort before heading to the locker room. Erica Wheeler stepped in to replace Mitchell on the court.
Mitchell returned to the bench around the eight-minute mark of the second quarter, sitting near the training staff and donning a warm-up shirt. The Fever star was also seen wearing a knee brace, which she later removed before joining her teammates at half court during the game.
Fever assistant coach Jhared Simpson provided an update on her condition, reassuring fans on the TV broadcast,
"Oh, she's fine. She's a warrior. She's on the bench."
Meanwhile, Mitchell played just 4:36 minutes and scored four points on 2-of-2 shooting from the field.
