"Nothing has changed": Chelsea Gray talks about having Aces teammates A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young in Team USA fold
Veteran point guard Chelsea Gray is excited to be representing the United States once again in the Olympic Games. That's more so because she gets to do it with three of her Las Vegas Aces teammate with whom she has a good relationship with.
The 31-year-old Gray is part of the U.S. team seeing action in women's 5x5 basketball at the Paris Olympic Games beginning next week. She's joined in the squad by fellow Aces A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young.
The four-time WNBA All-Star and three-time league champion shared her thoughts on playing with her Aces teammates in Team USA, highlighting how seamless the relationship between them is (via USA Basketball):
"Nothing has changed. We still hang out. We still talk the same. I still use nicknames and all the same things that I would in the Aces. I'm excited as heck to share this experience with them. They deserve it. They work their butts off to be here."
Chelsea Gray and the rest of the U.S. women's national basketball team will try to win an eighth straight gold at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Apart from the four Aces players, part of Team USA are Naphessa Collier (Minnesota), Kahleah Copper, Diana Taurasi and Brittney Grinner (Phoenix), Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart (New York), Jewell Loyd (Seattle) and Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut).
The U.S. begins its Olympic bid in Group C, along with Germany, Japan and Belgium. Its first game is on July 29 against Japan at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille.
Chelsea Gray loves playing for the Aces
Chelsea Gray said she's enjoying her time in Las Vegas playing for the Aces, which was why when she was signed for a contract extension through the 2025 season earlier this year, she couldn't help but be happy and excited.
The former Duke standout has been part of the Aces since 2021 after spending her early years in the WNBA with the Connecticut Sun and LA Sparks.
In Las Vegas, she has won two league titles (2022 and 2023) and was the Finals' most valuable player after leading the Aces to the 2022 title. After signing an extension with the team, Chelsea Gray opened up about playing in Las Vegas and her time with the squad:
"I love this franchise, this team and the city of Vegas. It's become my home. It's my family's home. I'm about championships and chasing history.
"We're close and we've created a trust, a bond, and want the best for each other all the time. I got to play alongside some future Hall of Famers that love winning as much as I do. We're chasing a legacy here in Vegas."
In the ongoing WNBA season, Gray has been limited to just 12 games for the Aces (16-8) as she makes her way back from injury. She's averaging 7.3 points, 4.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 25 minutes.
