PHOTO: First look at Sabrina Ionescu's latest custom sneaker designed by New York Liberty mascot Big Ellie
Sabrina Ionescu’s signature sneaker, the Nike Sabrina 2, dropped globally on June 25, 2024, much to the delight of basketball fans. “Court Vision” was the first colorway to come out. Decked in mostly black and purple, with a rainbow-colored or gray Swoosh logo, the shoe screamed on-court business.
“Ellie the Elephant,” the New York Liberty mascot, gave the shoe a little makeover by going to Nike’s custom option. The Sabrina 2 by Big Ellie now sports the green, black and white colors of the Liberty. An elephant print near the heel of the shoe makes it unmistakably a creation of the team mascot.
“Big Ellie” went on Instagram to proudly ask basketball fans:
“Name a mascot with her own shoe? YOU CAN’T 👏”
The post also showed a clip of the mascot practicing her shooting skills before coordinating with designers to give Sabrina Ionescu’s signature shoes a makeover. It didn’t surprise anyone when she pointed to the New York Liberty’s colors as the sneakers’ new wrapping.
More about Sabrina Ionescu’s shoes designed by Ellie the Elephant
For $160, basketball fans can get a pair of Sabrina Ionescu’s shoes designed by “Ellie the Elephant.” Multiple options are available for those who want to add more features to the shoes. Glow-in-the-dark soles, shimmering swoosh logos and extensive color choices are all available.
The original release dropped for $130, so the extra $30 is for the new features. Regardless of its color, it's built for performance. It's a follow-up to the highly appreciated original model that came out in September 2023.
Nike describes the Sabrina 2 as:
“28 grams lighter than the Sabrina 1 and offers support, stability and comfort”
Sabrina Ionescu will be wearing the Sabrina 2 in the 2024 WNBA playoffs
Behind Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Courtney Vandersloot, the New York Liberty clinched the No. 1 seed in the WNBA playoffs. New York held off the Minnesota Lynx to hold pole position leading into the postseason. They host the Atlanta Dream on Sunday in Game 1 of their first-round series.
“Big Ellie” dropping the custom-designed Sabrina 2 was timed just before the start of the playoffs. Basketball fans who might not have seen the mascot’s social media posts will likely see them as Ionescu wears the shoes in the postseason.
It remains to be seen, though, if the All-Star guard will use the colorway the beloved mascot designed for her and the team’s fans.
