Sydney Colson reveals how she found out WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert's NY-themed dress in Liberty's championship ceremony
Las Vegas Aces guard Sydney Colson recently went viral for finding a New York skyline-themed dress similar to what WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert wore during Game 5 of the WNBA Finals between the Liberty and the Lynx. Colson posted a photo of herself with the dress, and it quickly went viral.
Speaking on the latest episode of the "Best of Both Worlds" podcast with Flau'jae Johnson, Colson shared the story how of she found the New York-themed dress. She said she was in a Neiman Marcus department store and had to ask her girlfriend if it was alright to post about it.
"I was in Neiman Marcus looking for an outfit for something, and I was on the way out," Colson said. "When I tell you I hooked this left and seen that dress, I said, 'I know that ain't who I think it is.' I hit my girlfriend because a lot of times what I think is appropriate to tweet, I'm like, 'Mmmmmm.' I take stuff too far, so I hit her and she was busy.
She added:
"I'm like waiting by the dress going like, 'Is this good for me to tweet?' So once she finally answered, I was like, 'Can you look at the picture?' I need you to let me know if this is cool, if I'm doing too much.' She said it was cool, and I said, 'Bet!' Boop, tweet."
Sydney Colson posted the viral photo two days after the New York Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. The Liberty outlasted the Lynx in overtime to take home their first-ever WNBA championship.
However, Cathy Engelbert's dress stirred controversy, with some fans calling it inappropriate, saying the WNBA commissioner should have shown impartiality.
It was even more controversial given the nature of how the Liberty took home the win. Breanna Stewart was not called for traveling and a questionable foul whistle was made late in regulation, leading Stewart to make two free throws as New York forced overtime.
Sydney Colson's Aces were eliminated by New York in the semifinals
Sydney Colson has been a vital part of the Las Vegas Aces' success in the past few seasons as a veteran backup guard. Colson and the Aces had a chance to win their third consecutive championship this season, but their hopes were thwarted by the New York Liberty.
The Aces and Liberty faced each other in the WNBA semifinals in a rematch of last year's finals matchup. New York was out for revenge and got it after eliminating the back-to-back defending champions in four games.
Colson will be a free agent this offseason at the age of 35. She will play at the Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball, which is her fourth year for the Nashville-based women's league.
