"Their voice is the most powerful": LeBron James proudly hands reins of voting rights organization to WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike
LeBron James is considered one of the greatest players to ever pick up a basketball. Aside from his dominance in the sport, James is also a busy individual off the court with his philanthropic initiatives and endeavors.
Following his latest Olympic gold medal win, he announced that his 'More Than a Vote' non-profit organization will be led by Seattle Storm superstar Nneka Ogwumike.
Originally, it was founded in 2020, following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor as a call to action from the Lakers star. With this development, Ogwumike is envisioned to lead the drive for women and reproductive rights ahead of the 2024 elections.
James announced the news on X:
"So proud to pass the torch to @nnekaogwumike and an incredible team of women for this next round," James posted. "Their voice is the most powerful right now and we need to get behind them. I encourage ya'll to join the fight with us, led by these great ladies and @morethanavote!"
Behind Ogwumike, other WNBA athletes will also be onboard to provide proper guidance about the importance of women's rights.
The players involved are Cameron Brink, Lisa Leslie, Jewell Loyd, Chiney Ogwumike, Breanna Stewart, Sheryl Swoopes, A'ja Wilson, etc., as per The Hollywood Reporter's Alex Weprin.
When it comes to athletes such as LeBron James and Nneka Ogwumike, performing up to their standards on the court is what fans are accustomed to. However, it is always a tremendous moment when they all come together for matters and issues that go beyond the scope of a sport.
Nneka Ogwumike talked about leading LeBron James' 'More Than a Vote' non-profit organization
LeBron James has been a prominent presence when it comes to addressing social issues. He continues to maximize the reach of his platform, as per The Hollywood Reporter's Alex Weprin.
The same can now be said about Nneka Ogwumike as she takes over the leadership role in James' non-profit organization.
"Women's sports have experienced incredible growth over the course of my 13-year career in the WNBA," Ogwumike said, as per The Hollywood Reporter. "But over that very span, I've watched legislators chip away at my rights and the rights of every athlete who make these teams and leagues shine. We cannot stand idly by as women's freedom slips away ..."
Women's sports has seen tremendous growth over the years, courtesy of premier athletes paving the way and establishing the standard for future generations to follow suit. However, there is still work to be done as Ogwumike is aware of the importance of preserving women's freedom.
In a vastly changing world with continuously adapting circumstances, LeBron James and the Seattle Storm star are two athletes who strive to be more than just athletes.
