Watch: Diana Taurasi whoops and hugs Sabrina Ionescu after Liberty star drains half-court shot during Team USA practice
It was all fun and games at the Team USA camp as Diana Taurasi whooped and cheered for teammate Sabrina Ionescu's impressive half-court shot. The women's camp was in good spirits ahead of their last group clash against Germany, and it showed as the Phoenix Mercury star hugged Ionescu while engaging in some friendly banter with the rest of the team.
In a clip that did the rounds on X (formerly Twitter), the 3x WNBA champion was all praise for the New York Liberty sharpshooter as she geared up a half-court shot and nailed it during practice. The video also focused on the other stars who were all smiles after Ionescu's shot.
On the Olympics front, Team USA and Germany are the only two teams unbeaten in the pool stage. The former notched up wins against Japan and Belgium. A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart led the charge against Belgium as the side now guns for a clean finish in the group stage.
"It's the only thing I prepare for": Diana Taurasi has her sights set on the gold in final Olympics campaign
Earlier, Diana Taurasi confirmed that the 2024 Paris Olympics would be her last. The 42-year-old has enjoyed an illustrious career but has her sights set on one more gold to add to her silverware cabinet.
Speaking to ESPN, she shed light on her approach to the Olympics. She believed that there was enough left in the tank to make another push for gold, and the team also had the necessary firepower to go the distance.
"Win a gold medal. That's the only way I know how to handle basketball. I'm not distracted by anything. It's the only thing I think about. It's the only thing I prepare for, and that's my only mindset."
Taurasi already has five Olympic gold medals to her name, tied with WNBA legend Sue Bird. Now, she is determined to win her sixth, and the team's eighth consecutive overall. The Mercury star committed to remaining flexible for the team. She started in Team USA's two warmup games, averaging 18 minutes and 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
Team USA is pegged as the favorite to win the gold again this time around, but it does some stern competition. Up next, they play Germany on Sunday (Aug. 4) at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium. Only time will tell if Diana Taurasi will have an impact game for the side.
