What is the Ellie Wave? Breanna Stewart leads iconic New York Liberty celebration after blowout win versus Wings
The New York Liberty won their third-straight game back after an extended WNBA All-Star break, defeating the Dallas Wings by 20 points on Tuesday in a 94-74 blowout.
Despite missing Sabrina Ionescu due to a neck injury, Breanna Stewart helped lift the Liberty past the Wings with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Jonquel Jones and Courtney Vandersloot also played crucial roles for the Liberty, with Jones posting 23 points and Vandersloot pouring in 15 points with 11 assists and six rebounds.
After their blowout win, Breanna Stewart led Liberty fans in the Ellie Wave, New York's signature celebration after big wins.
The Ellie Wave is a celebration where Liberty fans wave their arms around like an elephant's trunk, paying homage to mascot, Ellie the Elephant, while "Ride That Wave" by DJ Frosty plays over the speakers.
The Liberty have looked dominant coming back from the All-Star break with a point differential of +67 over their last three games.
Here's a closer look at the Liberty's celebration:
A closer look into New York Liberty's signature celebration
Fans throughout Barclays Center took part in the Liberty's big-win celebration after New York's big win.
The celebration is usually performed after high-stake wins, normally with a notable player from the game leading the charge as Breanna Stewart did against Dallas.
While the win over the Wings may not be season-altering, it's fitting given the team's dominance in their first three games back from the All-Star break. New York looks like the best team in the WNBA with a league-leading record of 24-4 with 12 games left in the season.
If they can continue their outstanding play, the Liberty will have a chance to break the Las Vegas Aces' wins record of 34 set last season. With their remaining schedule, that feat feels realistic as the Liberty seem on track to win their first WNBA championship in franchise history.
New York will have a chance to avenge their WNBA Finals loss from last season with a playoff berth already clinched this year.
