Why is Breanna Stewart not playing today against Sky? Latest injury update for WNBA MVP candidate (July 13)

The New York Liberty will travel to the Wintrust Arena in Chicago for their second successive game against the Sky, but they will be without Breanna Stewart. They won their previous matchup in Brooklyn 91-76, but the Sky will seek revenge.

Stewart picked up a hamstring injury and has been ruled out of Saturday’s matchup. She was initially listed as questionable before being downgraded.

Stewart starred in Friday’s victory over the Sky with 19 points, six assists and four rebounds. Sabrina Ionescu top scored for her team with 21 points. Kayla Thornton added 16 off the bench as Jonquel Jones posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Leoni Fiebich added 13 points.

The Chicago Sky have had a mixed run of late with two losses in three games. Angel Reese continued her double-double showings with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Breanna Stewart’s absence gives Chicago Sky hope for quick revenge

The Liberty are looking to go one better than the previous season and emerge as WNBA champions for the first time in franchise history. They certainly have the talent to do so.

The Sky have won just once against the Liberty in three attempts thus far but have certainly given them a run for their money.

They boasted a 13-point lead in the first half in their previous meeting, before the Liberty went on a 14-1 run in the third quarter to come away with a 91-76 win. There are other positives for the Sky, as Reese herself has taken her run of consecutive double-doubles to a whopping 15 games.

After the win, Liberty head coach Sandy Bandello talked about the kind of impact Stewart and Jonquel Jones tend to have on the team:

“Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart. I think they just anchor us. We do a really good job of protecting the rim.”

In the absence of Stewart, expectations will be high on the likes of Ionescu and Courtney Vandersloot, who have been among the points of late.
