"Won 3 MVPs in the W with lesser numbers": Fans hit out at Sheryl Swoopes for downplaying Caitlin Clark's rookie season with 'not dominating' remark
WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes found herself facing backlash from fans after her comments on Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. On the "Gil's Arena" podcast, Swoopes reflected on Clark's rookie season and said that the 22-year-old is "not dominating" the WNBA.
"Those are hell of a numbers, but, to me, that's not dominating," Swoopes said in the video that was uploaded on Tuesday.
Hoops fans reacted sharply to the three-time WNBA MVP's assessment of Clark's rookie season. Some compared Swoopes' MVP season numbers with Clark's rookie season.
"These are Sheryl Swoopes MVP numbers… (2000) - 20.7 ppg, 4.0 ast, 6.3 rpg, (2002) - 18.5 ppg, 3.3 ast, 4.9 rpg, (2005) - 18.6 ppg, 4.3 ast, 3.6 rpg. These Are Caitlin Clark’s Rookie Numbers: (2024) - 19.5 ppg, 8.4 ast, 5.7 rpg. If Caitlin isn’t dominant now, Swoopes never was," one fan said.
"Swoops won 3 MVPs in the W with lesser numbers, interesting," commented another fan.
Another fan asserted that the four-time WNBA champion doesn't deserve to be on air to voice her opinion.
"Swoopes should not be given air time. Her value is zero, & it just keeps emboldening her with a pay check."
An irritated fan reacted sharply to Clark getting attacked on a consistent basis despite making a significant impact on winning.
"People need to quit attacking Clark. This is getting annoying!! You don’t hear NBA or NFL players get this kind of garbage. Every point, assist and rebound was important for each victory they had this season #FeverRising."
"Probably the greatest rookie season ever in the WNBA, and it’s not dominating. Going to be 1st team all WNBA , not dominating, nothing but hate and jealousy from her," wrote another X user.
"Swoopes is trying to make the Mount Rushmore of haters atp," commented another fan.
Former Iowa superstar Clark is enjoying one of the best rookie seasons in WNBA history. The 22-year-old averages 19.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists per game.
Sheryl Swoopes also hinted at locker room problem for Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever
Apart from downplaying Caitlin Clark's historic rookie season, Sheryl Swoopes suggested that the Indiana Fever locker room is in disarray, hinting that a few players are unhappy being a part of a roster led by Caitlin Clark.
"There's a lot of other s*** going on, that other (Fever) players are like 'This ain't where I want to be,'" Swoopes said.
"So you have players that are very significant on this Indiana Fever team that are like, 'I don't. ... I don't think this is where I wanna be this year,'" she added.
The WNBA legend didn't provide any concrete evidence to support her claim about which players might be unhappy with the franchise. Sheryl Swoopes' remarks were based solely on fan reactions circulating on social media.
