Randy Orton belongs to the famous Orton family of professional grapplers. He is the nephew of Barry Orton, the son of Bob Orton Jr., and the grandson of Bob Orton. He has two younger siblings, a brother named Nathan (stand-up comedian) and a sister named Rebecca. His parents and family members don't want him to become a professional grappler. They put an effort into keeping Randy Orton out of the wrestling world and warned him that he might have to stay away from his family.

He started his amateur career while he was a student at Hazelwood Central High School. He was recruited at the Marins (USMC) following his graduation. He was discharged in 1999 after bad conduct and neglect of an order from his superior. Orton was found guilty and spent almost 40 days in the brig at Camp Pendleton under a special court-martial. This incident made Orton cover up his old left-hand Marine tattoo.
