Danny Green: A Brief Biography

Daniel Richard Green Jr., nicknamed Danny Green, is a professional American basketball player. He plays in the National Basketball Association as a shooting guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Born on June 22, 1987, Danny is the only player in ACC’s (Atlantic Coast Conference) history to have at least 1000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists, 150 three-pointers, 150 blocks and 150 steals. Also, he played the most games (145) and saw more wins (123) than any other player while playing college basketball. Green entered the NBA league in 2009 when the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the 46th overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft. The 3-time NBA champion was also included in the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2017.

Danny Green Early Life

Danny Green was born in North Babylon, New York to father Danny Senior and mother Rene Darrell. He also has two siblings (brothers), Devonte Green and Rashad Green. After the demise of his wife, Danny Green Sr. raised his children as a single parent. He urged and motivated Danny to play basketball, given his tall height. Danny Green attended high school in his hometown before playing basketball at the college level.

Danny Green NBA Journey

Danny Green initiated his NBA campaign with the Cleveland Cavaliers after being drafted by the franchise in the 2009 NBA draft. However, he managed to play only 20 games for the Cavaliers in his rookie year. The Cleveland Cavaliers waived him before the next season. Later, Danny was acquired by the San Antonio Spurs in November 2010 but they also waived him only after 6 days. He played only 2 games for the Spurs.

In January of the next year, the Reno Bighorns (NBA Development League) traded him. Danny averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds in 16 games he played for the Bighorns. However, the San Antonio Spurs signed Danny again in March 2011 but moved to the Olimpija under a one-year contract in August 2011. Green joined the camp of Spurs and he played his breakout season as a starter in 38 of 66 games he played. He averaged 9.1 points per game.

In July 2012, Danny signed a contract extension with the Spurs for over three years. He posted 9 points in his first game of the season against the New Orleans Hornets. On November 1 and 3, Danny scored 13 and 21 points to help his team register victories against the Thunder and Jazz, respectively. In a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on February 6, Danny secured a career-high 28 points and 8 three-pointers.

Against the Phoenix Suns on April 11, 2014, Danny scored a career-high 33 points. This season also brought Green his first NBA championship when the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat in the Finals. With that, Danny Green joined Michael Jordan and James Worthy to have both NCAA and NBA titles.

Along with Kawhi Leonard, Green was traded to the Toronto Raptors in July 2018. In a victorious game against the New York Knicks on November 10, he attained the milestone of 1000 three-pointers of his career. In a win over the Grizzlies on January 19, Green secured a season-high 24 points and set a franchise record for three-pointers in a quarter. Danny Green logged a season-high 29 points against the Orlando Magic on April 1. He helped his team clinch the 2019 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.

In July 2019, Danny was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers under a two-year contract. He scored 28 points in his debut for the Lakers on October 22 against the Los Angeles Clippers. He helped his team finish as a top seed in the Western Conference before the suspension of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in the 2020 NBA Finals.

In November 2020, Danny Green was acquired by the Oklahoma City Thunder and then further traded to the Philadelphia 76ers the next month. He signed a two-year agreement with the 76ers in August 2021. However, Danny injured his left knee due to a collision with his teammate Joel Embiid against the Miami Heat on May 12, 2022.

Before returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 15, 2023, Green also stayed with the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets. He put up 3 points in a 10-minute play against the Blazers in his Grizzlies debut on February 1, 2023.

Danny Green attended North Babylon High School in North Babylon. He also played football apart from basketball in his school as a freshman. Later, Danny joined St. Mary’s High School based in Manhasset from his sophomore year onwards. As a senior, Green averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks.

Thereafter, Danny joined the University of North Carolina and averaged 5.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in his sophomore season. As a junior, Green averaged 11.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2 assists per game. Danny declared himself eligible for the NBA 2008 draft but didn’t trade. He returned to his school for his last year and captained his team to help it win its fifth national championship. He averaged 13.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists each game for the season.
