Eric Gordon: A Brief Biography
Eric Ambrose Gordon Jr. is an American professional basketball player and a current member of the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Playing for the North Central high school, Gordon was named "Mr. Basketball" of Indiana during his senior year. His high level of play and talent that year created a recruiting competition between the University of Illinois and Indiana University in the spring and summer of 2006 which became a subject of media coverage.
Gordon decided to play his college basketball at Indiana. In his first and only year there, he was considered as one of the top collegiate players in the nation. He averaged 21.5 points per game lead the Big Ten in scoring and was also tied for 19th in the nation. Gordon was drafted as the 7th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.
In his rookie season, Gordon set a franchise record for most points scored by a rookie with 41 points (later broken by Blake Griffin). In 2011, Gordon was traded to the New Orleans Hornets in a deal that got Chris Paul to the Clippers. In his three seasons with the Clippers, Gordon averaged 18.1 points, 3.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.
In the 2014-15 season, Gordon shot a career-high 44.8 percent from the three point line. In his first playoff series, Gordon averaged 18.5 points, 3.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds shooting 40.6 percent. Nevertheless, the Pelicans were swept by the Warriors in the first round. In 2016, Gordon was traded to the Houston Rockets.
With the Rockets, Gordon was handed the role of the sixth man. In 2017, at the All-Star Weekend, he edged out Kyrie Irving to win the Three-point Contest. He averaged 16.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 75 games and was named Sixth Man of the Year, becoming the first player in franchise history to receive the award. In game 5 of the 2018 Western Conference Finals, Gordon came off the bench and scored 24 points against the Golden State Warriors. His steal on the last Warriors’ possession helped the Rockets win the game and take a 3-2 series lead. The Rockets went onto loose the series in seven games.
Since 2019 to 2023, Gordon has hade several injuries derailing his career progress. On February 9, 2023, Gordon was traded back to the Clippers but he was waived by the team on June 28, 2023. About a week later, he signed with the Phoenix Suns where he will be playing his 2023-24 NBA season.
