Zach LaVine: A Brief Biography
Zach LaVine is an American professional basketball player who plays as a Shooting Guard for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA. He is currently playing his 8th season and has been two times NBA All-Star in 2020 and 2021 and was also a member of Team USA which won Gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He was chosen by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft; he is well-known for his powerful dunks. He has won the Slam Dunk Contest twice. He won consecutive dunk contests for the fourth time in NBA history in 2016. In 2017 saw his trade to Chicago.
Early life
In March 1995, Zach LaVine was born in Renton, Washington. He is a guard who attended Bothell High School. He had 28.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game as a senior and was crowned Washington Mr. Basketball and AP Washington Player of the Year in 2013. He was also a first-team Parade All-American.
LaVine participated in the 2014 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team while playing collegiate basketball for UCLA. In the 2014 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with pick number 13. He played three seasons for the Minnesota Timberwolves and then later traded to the Chicago Bulls.
NBA Journey
He won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest and made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during his first season with the Timberwolves. He was the fourth NBA player to ever win four straight dunk competitions in 2016.
His playing time was limited at the beginning of his rookie season, but after the team's starter, Ricky Rubio, was placed on an indefinite leave of absence, he was moved back to the bench in favor of Mo Williams. Williams' absence due to back spasms gave him another opportunity. Williams' trade that season, which came after Rubio's comeback, gave him more opportunities. He participated in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge that year and won the Dunk Contest.
LaVine started at point guard for most of the 2015–16 season because Rubio missed a lot of games once more. He won the dunk contest for the second straight year and was voted the MVP of Team USA in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge. His 40 points during the 2016–17 campaign set a new career high.
LaVine suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, which was discovered by an MRI scan on February 4, 2017, and he was declared out for the rest of the season. He successfully underwent surgery to rebuild his knee ten days later. LaVine was dealt to the Chicago Bulls on June 22, 2017, along with Kris Dunn and the rights to Lauri Markkanen (the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft), for Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton rights (the 16th pick in the 2017 NBA draft).
